The aim of the Widening Participation and Outreach team is to support young people in making realistic, well-informed decisions about their future, challenging preconceptions, and helping them to develop the skills, knowledge and grades required to meet their aspirations.

We work with schools and colleges in areas of deprivation or with low progression rates onto higher education, with young people who will be the first generation of their family to attend HE and students from a care background.

Duties

  • To design and deliver careers and IAG modules to support a wide range of Widening Participation Outreach programmes including UniFocus Days, UniTaster events and primary school activities.
  • Provide impartial information, advice and guidance in schools and colleges to support young people to make well informed decisions about their future. This will include careers interviews, group sessions, action plans and drop in sessions.
  • Provide UCAS support in schools and colleges focused on the application process and personal statements for Post-16 students, including guidance in integrating UCAS support into City St George’s Widening Participation offer.
  • Build strong, sustainable relationships with target schools and colleges to support delivery of Careers sessions and Widening Participation outreach.
  • Work closely with colleagues with the team on the selection, recruitment, training and ongoing development of WP Student Ambassadors.

Essential criteria

  • Professional qualification in Careers Guidance – Diploma in Careers Guidance (Parts 1&2) – QCF Level 6 Diploma in Careers Guidance.
  • Experience in working across the curriculum delivering IAG activities.
  • A knowledge of safeguarding issues and legislation.
  • Good organisation, self-motivation and the ability to exercise initiative is required along with the ability to prioritise workload independently while working as part of a busy team.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills are also required to develop partnerships with external agencies and organisations and work with a wide range of staff within City.
  • Excellent team working skills are also needed.
